Preventative Care

In addition to your routine check-up, your dentist will usually perform a scale and clean. This professional clean is done as a preventative method to keep your gums healthy, prevent gum disease and remove the build up of calculus from around your teeth.

Everyone has calculus on their teeth. Calculus is formed when the soft plaque growing in or mouths sticks to the teeth, and the minerals in our saliva turn it hard, creating calculus. If this calculus is not removed it will continue to grow deeper around your teeth and under your gums. This build-up is known to cause gum disease, give you red, bleeding gums, bad breath, or even cause tooth loss.

Once this gum and bone is lost, it is impossible to get it back. If this is the case, all that can be done is to stabilise the condition of your teeth and gums. In some cases, teeth can become so loose due to a lac of gum support that they will simply fall out.

Bleeding Gums

If you find your gums are bleeding when you brush your teeth, it is important for you to visit your dentist. Bleeding gums usually indicate that your gums are inflamed and unhealthy. A scale and clean from your dentist and improved brushing and oral hygiene on your part will, in most cases, improve the health of your gums and this bleeding should stop within two weeks.
