Tooth Whitening

teeth-whitening

All of us want bright, white and healthy looking teeth, but unfortunately not everyone is 100% happy with how their smile looks. This is where cosmetic dentistry can help.

While there are a wide range of tooth whitening procedures available, not every treatment will be effective in a lot of cases. We therefore try and understand the cause of the discolouration you suffer from in order to determine the best way to treat it.

Some of the most common causes of discolouration include:

  • Consumption of highly coloured food and drinks (e.g. berries, chocolate, coffee and tea).
  • Being exposed to certain antibiotics at a young age.
  • Smoking.
  • General discolouration resulting from ageing.

If you are unhappy with the colour, shape or general appearance of your teeth then it always best to come in for a consultation. During this appointment your dentist can assess your teeth and talk to you about what results you are looking for. They can then present you with a treatment plan that suits you and your budget.

Some of the treatments recommended could include:

  • In-surgery laser whitening system, with almost instant results
  • A take-home whitening kit - similar results to the in-chair option but over time. This is a relatively inexpensive approach.
  • Porcelain veneers, giving a full smile makeover.

A note on fillings

If you have fillings in your front teeth, most whitening methods will not affect their colour. If you have concerns about the colour of your fillings post-whitening, then it may be worth having then refilled to match your freshly whitened smile.

Tooth whitening can also cause varying degrees of sensitivity. Your dentist will discuss this with you to determine if it will become a problem, and work out a plan of how to manage it effectively.
