Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth typically start to erupt between the ages of 17 and 21. Unfortunately, this can often present a problem if there is not enough room for them to come through, or if they are erupting at an angle.

Any difficulty with your wisdom teeth should be checked out by your dentist, as problematic wisdom teeth may cause significant complications, including:

  • Recurrent infections associated with the site causing other generalised health issues and toothache
  • In severe cases, spreading of this infection can constrict airways causing breathing difficulties
  • Constant halitosis (or bad breath) as a result of recurrent infection
  • Inability to clean other teeth in the area thoroughly. Often the angle of the impacted wisdom teeth can prevent proper cleaning of adjacent teeth, which then causes these teeth to become decayed. In severe cases they can be so badly damaged that extraction becomes the only option.

It is also important to consider that if extraction is required later in life, it will be more difficult for your body to heal after the procedure.

In order to have your wisdom teeth removed, a full OPG x-ray will need to be taken of your mouth. This allows your dentist to better plan for an extraction procedure.
Due to their location at the back of the jaw, wisdom teeth can be more complex to remove than other teeth. In some cases your dentist may wish to refer you to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to give you the best results possible.

At Plainland Dental, we offer a range of treatments for dealing with any wisdom teeth problems you or your family might have.

In-Surgery Alternatives

For your convenience we have arranged for a dentist with a special interest in oral surgery to visit our practice on a fortnightly basis. This provides an affordable alternative to expensive day surgery in a private hospital. However, if you would prefer to be asleep for your procedure then we will gladly work with an oral surgeon to have this organised for you.

For more information regarding wisdom teeth, please don’t hesitate to call our surgery.
