Dental implant surgery is a procedure that replaces damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function much like real ones. Dental implant surgery can offer a welcome alternative to ill-fitting dentures or bridgework.

How the surgery is performed depends on the type of implants and the condition of your jawbone, but all dental implant surgery occurs in stages and involves several procedures, meaning the process can be done over a period of months.

Why it's doneimplants-teeth

Rather than resting on your gum line or using adjacent teeth as anchors, dental implants are surgically placed into your jawbone and act as the roots of missing teeth. Because they are made from titanium, the implants will integrate with the jawbone.

Dental implants may be the right choice for you if you:

  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Have a jawbone that has reached full growth
  • Have adequate bone to secure the implants (or are able to have a bone graft)
  • Have healthy oral tissue
  • Don’t have any health conditions that will affect bone healing
  • Are unable or unwilling to wear dentures
  • Want to fix speech impediments caused by missing teeth
  • Are willing to commit time to the full process of an implant

What can you expect?

The entire process can take from three to nine months, and occasionally longer than this. While this may seem like a long time, a lot of this is spent healing, and waiting for the growth of new bone in the jaw.

The first part of the process is to implant the titanium cylinder into the jawbone.
After a healing period, an abutment is fitted onto the cylinder. Finally, the artificial tooth is then attached to the abutment, giving the look of a real tooth.
