The Same Day Crown Process

How it works: our dental crown process

Step 1Tooth Preparation

We shape your tooth surface to ensure a perfect fit for the crown.

Step 2 Dental Imaging

Our digital scanner captures a precise image of your tooth.

Step 33D Digital Modelling

A digital model of your teeth and the new crown is generated.

Step 4 In-House Fabrication

Using our milling machine, we craft the crown from a ceramic block right in our practice.

Step 5Immediate Placement

Your custom crown is then placed by your dentist, all in one convenient appointment.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength and appearance. Once bonded in place, a crown fully encases the visible portion of a tooth above the gum line, allowing it to function like a natural tooth.

Dental crowns are one of the most versatile procedures in general dentistry, as they can be used for a range of different purposes. Whether you need to protect a tooth after root canal therapy, cover a heavily restored tooth, or improve the aesthetics of a discoloured tooth, crowns can offer a durable, natural-looking solution.

Traditional Crowns
(Two Appointments)

Sometimes, your dentist may recommend a crown made in a specialised dental lab instead of using our in-house CEREC technology. Our in-house machine only produces porcelain and zirconia crowns, so for crowns made of materials like gold, a lab is needed.

During the first appointment, your dentist will prepare the tooth and take a 3D scan using a digital scanner, providing precise results without the mess of traditional impressions. A temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth until the permanent crown is ready.

At the second appointment, the dentist will replace the temporary crown with the custom-made permanent crown, ensuring a perfect fit and proper alignment.

Which crown materials are right for you?

The material used for your dental crown will depend on the location of the tooth, your bite, aesthetic preferences and your dentist’s recommendation.

Common options include:

  • Porcelain/ceramic: Closely matches the natural colour and translucency of teeth, making them a popular choice for front teeth.
  • Zirconia: Highly durable and tooth-coloured. Well-suited to back teeth where strength is a priority.
  • Gold and metal alloys: Extremely durable and long-lasting. Occasionally recommended for back teeth where appearance is less of a concern.

Your dentist will walk you through the most suitable option for your individual needs at your consultation.

Dental Crowns FAQ

Typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours from start to finish. Your dentist will give you a more specific estimate based on your case.

Dental crowns typically last between 10 and 15 years, and often longer with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. Their lifespan depends on the material used, the location of the crown, bite forces and how well the surrounding teeth and gums are maintained. Some crowns can last 20 years or more with proper care. Individual results may vary.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you shouldn't feel sharp pain. Some pressure is normal. Post-appointment, you may notice mild sensitivity for a few days, which typically settles.

The main differences are:

  • Same day (CEREC): designed, during your appointment using a CEREC machine, then fitted in a single visit.  No temporary crown needed.
  • Traditional (lab-made): The crown is made by our technicians in our on-site dental lab. Once completed, you’ll return to the clinic for a second appointment so we can fit and cement the final crown, with a temporary crown worn in between visits.

Your dentist will recommend the best option for you based on your tooth and material requirements.

Crown treatment may be covered, or partially covered, depending on your fund and level of cover.
