What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth replacement that works differently from other options you might have heard about.

Dental implants consist of a titanium post placed surgically into your jawbone, functioning as an artificial tooth root. With time, bone and gum tissue naturally grow around the post, creating a stable foundation.

A custom-designed crown, bridge or denture is then attached to the implant. These are created specifically for you, matching your natural teeth where possible and are designed to comfortably fit in your mouth.

Unlike removable dentures, dental implants are permanently fixed into place and can be cared for just like your natural teeth, with regular brushing, flossing and dental visits.

Your dental implant journey with us

Everyone’s smile is different. That’s why we tailor each step to your specific needs:

Step 1Free Consultation

During your consultation, we will evaluate your oral health and discuss the entire process, outline the procedure, and answer any questions you may have. This is your opportunity to ask questions, share concerns and understand what treatment could involve, including potential risks and recovery.

Step 2Preparation and Design

If you decide to move forward, we’ll create your personal treatment plan. It starts with a thorough examination using digital X-rays and 3D imaging. This helps us understand your unique anatomy, including jawbone density, positioning of nerves and the best approach for your individual case.

Step 3Implant Placement

During the surgery, the titanium implant is placed into the jawbone. If a tooth is still present, it may be removed and the implant placed in the same appointment.

In other cases, your dentist may recommend removing the tooth earlier to allow for optimal healing before implant placement.

Step 4Final Restoration

Once your mouth is fully healed and the implant is stabilised, we can place the crown, bridge or denture on top. Typically, it will take around 3–6 months, depending on how your body heals. Everyone’s healing journey is different, and we’ll support you with clear aftercare guidance.

Suitability for dental implants varies based on your unique health, circumstances and what you hope to achieve. But we’re here to explore those possibilities together.

Since 2010, we’ve been caring for Lockyer Valley families from our conveniently located Plainland practice, welcoming patients from Grantham, Toowoomba, Helidon and throughout the region.

What are some features of dental implants?

  • Fixed in place: Implants don’t need to be removed for cleaning. They become part of your mouth, and you can care for them like your natural teeth.
  • Function and comfort: Many patients find they can enjoy a wider variety of food with implants compared to other options. This is because they’re designed to support chewing in a way that functions like natural teeth.
  • Durability: With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, implants can be long-lasting. How long they last depends on your individual circumstances, including your oral health habits, medical history and lifestyle.
  • Appearance: Our planning process considers both how your implant will function and how it looks. Each one is custom-designed to fill gaps in your smile and
  •  complement the surrounding teeth, creating a result that blends with your existing smile. While outcomes vary, your dentist will talk through what’s achievable for your circumstances.

Real patients, real journeys

Important Information:

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. This information is general in nature and does not replace personalised professional dental advice. Treatment outcomes and recovery experiences vary significantly between individuals.

FAQS:

Typically, the dental implant surgery will take from 1 to 2 hours. Our team will discuss the surgery with you ahead of the procedure, so you know exactly what’s going to happen.

The healing process for dental implants typically takes 3–6 months, as the implant undergoes osseointegration, where it fuses with your jawbone.

Results vary between individuals, and likely your healing time is dependent on your oral routines and health considerations.

During a consultation, we’ll discuss realistic expectations for your journey so you’re well informed about the procedure.

We use local anaesthesia during your implant surgery to numb the area being treated. You should not feel any sharp pain during placement. As you are awake for the procedure, you may feel some pressure and light movement as the dentist works.Afterwards, discomfort levels vary; some patients report minimal soreness, while others need over-the-counter pain medication for several days. We’ll provide detailed aftercare instructions and support so you’re comfortable during your recovery.
