If you experience dental anxiety, sedation dentistry is ideal as it allows you to remain at ease throughout dental treatment. Your dentist can also work more efficiently as you are relaxed and may be able to complete multiple treatments in a single appointment rather than spacing them out for your comfort.
How does inhalation sedation work?
Inhalation sedation is a stress free process. The patient wears a small nose piece and a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide, aka ‘happy or laughing gas’, is administered. Within minutes you should feel more relaxed. Nitrous oxide has a pleasant odour, and the unobtrusive nose piece allows you to breathe normally.
The gas is a safe, effective treatment, the effects dissipate within minutes of being stopped. This allows your dentist to easily increase or decrease the dosage depending on the level of sedation you are comfortable with.
Is inhalation sedation safe?
After inhalation sedation you won’t experience any ‘groggy’ side effects after the procedure. In fact, it’s ok to safely drive home after having nitrous oxide as the gas leaves your body within three to five minutes.
