What is root canal therapy?
Root canal therapy can rescue a tooth when its nerve is damaged or dies due to decay or injury.
Instead of extracting the tooth, we remove the infected or damaged pulp from inside it, preserving the tooth’s structure.
Contrary to popular belief, a root canal is not a painful procedure. With the aid of modern technology and effective numbing agents, most of our patients find them no more uncomfortable than a regular filling, ensuring a comfortable experience.
A small number may feel discomfort during the first visit if their tooth is severely infected and already causing pain. After the procedure, patients usually experience relief from their initial toothache.
What’s involved in a root canal treatment?
A root canal procedure typically spans two to three visits and
includes:
- Locating and extracting the dead pulp.
- Thoroughly cleaning and sterilizing the pulp chamber and root
canal. - Filling and sealing the pulp chamber and root canal to prevent
bacterial re-entry.
Following the procedure, it’s often recommended to safeguard the
tooth with a crown. The initial decay or trauma that damaged the nerve may have weakened the tooth’s structural integrity. A crown will help strengthen the tooth.
